Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad 20oz Insulated Tumbler
Product Details & Size Guide
Carry a piece of Pittsburgh rail history into the day with this Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad tumbler. Known as the Little Giant, the line linked Pittsburgh with Youngstown, extended toward Connellsville and reached Lake Erie in 1914. Its compact route moved a remarkable share of regional freight, including steel-industry essentials. A fitting everyday companion for railroad enthusiasts, P&LE collectors and anyone drawn to the stories behind western Pennsylvania's working rail network.
Formed on May 11, 1875, the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad grew from a Pittsburgh businessman's plan into a specialized freight line serving the region's steel industry. Its original route connected Pittsburgh with Youngstown, Ohio, and opened in 1879. The railroad extended south to Connellsville, Pennsylvania, through the Pittsburgh, McKeesport and Youghiogheny Railroad, leased in 1884; it reached Ashtabula, Ohio, on Lake Erie in 1914. New York Central interests gained influence in 1880, and the railroad came under more formal control of the New York Central system in 1887, while operating as an independent subsidiary. Known as the Little Giant, it carried a large share of freight relative to its route mileage, including coal, coke, iron ore, limestone and steel. After New York Central and Pennsylvania combined to form Penn Central in 1968, the P&LE again became independent in 1969. The decline of steel traffic and the end of its independent operation followed: CSX acquired the railroad in 1993 and placed it under the Three Rivers Railway subsidiary. Its Pittsburgh passenger terminal, at the Smithfield Street Bridge, is now part of Station Square.
