Celebrate the Pan Handle Route with a polo inspired by a railroad whose reach grew through regional connections and landmark mergers. From the Pittsburgh and Steubenville link to routes serving Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and East St. Louis, its story reflects a changing map of American rail travel. A distinctive choice for railroad fans, history-minded wearers, and collectors who appreciate the lasting identity of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad.

The Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, known as the Pan Handle Route, connected Pittsburgh with routes west to Chicago and south through Indianapolis to East St. Louis. Its history grew from several railroads chartered in the mid-19th century. The Steubenville and Indiana Railroad began service in Ohio in 1853, while the Pittsburgh and Steubenville line and its Ohio River bridge opened in 1865, linking Pittsburgh and Steubenville. In 1868, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railway was formed by a merger that included those companies. Further combinations extended its reach: the Columbus and Indiana Central and Chicago and Great Eastern joined in 1868, creating routes to Chicago and Indianapolis. The Pennsylvania Railroad gained access to Cincinnati through a 1869 lease of the Little Miami Railroad, and its network later reached East St. Louis. In 1890, a merger formed the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway. That railway merged with several other companies in 1916 to form the railroad bearing this profile’s name. Leased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1921, it was merged into that system’s Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad in 1956. Portions of its former routes now serve rail, transit, roadway, and trail uses.
