Carry the story of a landmark Puerto Rico retailer into everyday wear with this Pitusa quarter zip pullover. Almacenes Pitusa opened its first store in 1976 and expanded across the island, developing a varied presence in department retail, discount shopping, supermarkets, hardware, and furniture. Its 1984 Carolina Extra Warehouse and 1989 Levittown hypermarket reflect the scale of its growth. The company’s later transitions tell another part of the story, making this a meaningful pick for collectors and anyone who remembers shopping at Pitusa.
Founded in Puerto Rico in 1976, Almacenes Pitusa began when Israel Kopel opened its first store using a format that differed from the island’s traditional retail approach. The chain expanded through densely populated areas, adding supermarkets and discount stores. In 1984, it opened an Extra Warehouse in Carolina, a 46,000-square-foot store with parking for more than 400 cars; that year it also opened in Bayamón. By 1985, its twentieth branch had opened, and the company was planning further growth. Pitusa opened its first hypermarket in Levittown in 1989 and reported around 40 stores and 2,000 employees that year. In 2003, it announced new department store, supermarket, and National Lumber locations in Río Grande and Yabucoa. In 2011, Pitusa confirmed it was leaving the supermarket business. The following year, it consolidated its hardware operations under Metropolitan Lumber & Hardware, a company it had founded in 2009, and sold its 22-store Muebles y Enseres furniture business to Super Buy Furniture. Pitusa Muebles y Enseres filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2014. A few Pitusa-branded stores remained afterward, but they eventually closed or were rebranded.
