GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Celebrate a locally rooted name in Alabama business history with this Pizitz card holder. The company began in Birmingham in 1899 as the Louis Pizitz Dry Goods Co., then grew into a regional department store chain with locations across the state. Its downtown flagship and later stores became part of the area’s shopping landscape. The change to McRae’s in December 1986 closed one chapter, while former store buildings and family property ties continue to add interest for collectors of corporate history.
Pizitz was an Alabama department store chain founded in 1899 as the Louis Pizitz Dry Goods Co. Its first store stood on the site of the company’s later flagship building in downtown Birmingham. At its peak, the chain operated 12 additional stores, mostly around Birmingham, with several in Huntsville and other Alabama cities. Pizitz became a major regional retailer, linking its name to downtown shopping in Birmingham and to a broader network of Alabama stores. In December 1986, the chain was sold to McRae’s, and all former Pizitz stores became McRae’s locations. McRae’s was sold to Belk, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2005. The transition left many former Pizitz locations closed, while the Pizitz family, through Pizitz Management Group, continued to own the buildings of most former stores. The family also donated land on which Louis Pizitz Middle School was built. The company’s history thus spans its 1899 founding, regional growth, the 1986 store transition, and the later change in ownership of its successor chain.
