Plum Creek Timber Company was a timberland owner and manager with forest products, mineral extraction, natural gas, and property development operations. It began as a master limited partnership spun off from Burlington Resources on June 8, 1989; Burlington Resources had been created in 1988 from the natural resources holdings of the Burlington Northern railroad. Plum Creek inherited some timberland traceable to federal grants to the Northern Pacific Railway in the 1860s. On July 1, 1999, the partnership converted to a real estate investment trust. In 2000, it acquired Georgia-Pacific’s timberland division. Headquartered in Seattle, the company owned and managed about 6.58 million acres in 19 states as of December 31, 2014, and operated five wood products facilities in the Northwest. It produced softwood lumber for retail home centers and distributors, alongside other natural-resource and property activities. In 2015, Seattle-based Weyerhaeuser announced an $8.4 billion acquisition of Plum Creek; the transaction closed on February 19, 2016, combining the companies as the largest private timberland owner in the United States.
