GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep business cards close alongside a story from El Paso's retail past. This Popular Dry Goods Metal Business Card Holder celebrates a company founded in 1902 by Adolf Schwartz, his nephew Maurice, and other relatives. The Popular grew into a department-store chain with downtown and mall locations, including Bassett Center, Northgate, and Sunland Park Mall. All four stores closed in 1995, making the brand a meaningful discovery for local-history enthusiasts and collectors of regional businesses.
Popular Dry Goods Company, known as The Popular and La Popular, was a locally owned department-store chain in El Paso, Texas. Adolf Schwartz, a Hungarian immigrant who had opened Tres B and The Fair, founded the company in 1902 with his nephew Maurice Schwartz and other relatives. The Popular succeeded The Fair, which Schwartz closed that year. In 1907, the store moved from El Paso and Overland Streets to Mesa and San Antonio Streets. It had three floors by 1914, and in 1917 Schwartz transformed it from a general store into a modern department store in a six-story building at the same intersection. After Schwartz died in 1941, his nephew Maurice and, later, Maurice’s sons Herbert M. Schwartz and Albert J. Schwartz ran the company. Expansion began in 1962 with a Bassett Center location, followed by Northgate in 1966 and Sunland Park Mall in 1988. The Northgate site was later associated with the name Northpark Mall. At its closing in 1995, the chain had four El Paso locations: Downtown, Bassett Center, Northgate Center and Sunland Park Mall. All stores closed on November 6, 1995. Dillard’s purchased the credit accounts and Bassett Center store; Sears purchased the Sunland Park location, and the other two locations were dissolved.
