Celebrate a distinctive chapter in Philadelphia television history with this PRISM luggage tag. The regional premium channel brought feature films and local sports into one lineup, launching in 1976 with a movie and presenting its first Phillies game ten days later. Its identity was closely tied to The Spectrum, where its production facilities were based. A thoughtful travel accessory for collectors of Philadelphia media history and fans who remember the era when regional cable connected movies, teams and communities.
PRISM, short for Philadelphia Regional In-home Sports and Movies, was a regional premium cable channel serving the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It launched on September 1, 1976, with a feature film, then aired its first sports event, a Phillies baseball game, ten days later. Founded by Flyers owner Edward M. Snider and Spectacor, with an initial 50 percent stake held by 20th Century Fox, the channel combined movies with local baseball, hockey, basketball, college sports and other live events. Its offices were in Bala Cynwyd, and its production facilities were at The Spectrum in South Philadelphia. Ownership changed over time: Snider bought out Fox in 1982; Rainbow Media and The Washington Post Company acquired the channel in 1983; CBS later held a minority stake; and Rainbow gained full control in 1987. PRISM added companion sports channel SportsChannel Philadelphia in 1990. In 1996, Comcast acquired Spectacor, and plans for a new Comcast sports network reshaped local broadcast rights. Rainbow shut PRISM down on October 1, 1997. The premium movie channel Starz! replaced it, while Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia succeeded SportsChannel Philadelphia.
