Its lineage began with Leopold Cahn & Co., founded in 1879, and the firm was reorganized as J.S. Bache & Co. in 1891 after Jules Bache joined the partnership. Bache merged with Chicago-based Halsey, Stuart & Co. in 1974. Prudential Financial acquired the company, then called Bache Halsey Stuart Shields, in 1981 and renamed it Prudential-Bache Securities. The Bache name was dropped from the brokerage division in 1991, when it became Prudential Securities. Prudential retained commodities and financial derivatives businesses, rebranded as Prudential Bache in January 2003; Jefferies Group acquired that unit in 2011.
