Prudential Securities was the American financial services brokerage arm of insurer Prudential Financial. Its lineage began with Leopold Cahn & Co., founded in 1879, and the firm was reorganized as J.S. Bache & Co. in 1891 after Jules Bache joined the partnership. Bache merged with Chicago-based Halsey, Stuart & Co. in 1974. Prudential Financial acquired the company, then called Bache Halsey Stuart Shields, in 1981 and renamed it Prudential-Bache Securities. The Bache name was dropped from the brokerage division in 1991, when it became Prudential Securities. The firm acquired branch offices, client accounts, and related assets from Thomson McKinnon in 1989 after a proposed purchase fell through, and acquired Volpe Brown Whelan & Company in 1999. Following investigations into limited partnership sales in the 1980s and 1990s, Prudential agreed in 1993 to a $330 million investor settlement and $41 million in fines. On July 1, 2003, Prudential Financial combined its retail brokerage with Wachovia in a joint venture, with Wachovia holding 62 percent and Prudential 38 percent. The brokerage became part of Wachovia Securities. Prudential retained commodities and financial derivatives businesses, rebranded as Prudential Bache in January 2003; Jefferies Group acquired that unit in 2011.
