Start the day with a reminder of a bold early automobile experiment. Reber Manufacturing Company was founded in 1901 by James C. Reber, who announced a Wyomissing plant after building and testing a prototype. The company’s Type IV Model A, a French-type tonneau powered by a vertical-twin engine, was produced from 1902 to 1903. This coffee mug celebrates that compact history and the announced 1903 shift toward Acme Motor Car Company, for enthusiasts of cars and regional industry.
Reber Manufacturing Company was founded in 1901 by James C. Reber to build automobiles in the Reading, Pennsylvania, area. On July 15, 1901, Reber announced plans for a plant at Wyomissing and said he had built and tested a prototype. The company developed several experimental models. In 1902, Reber hired engineer James Heaslet, formerly of Autocar, to help design a French-type automobile. The resulting Reber Type IV Model A was a tonneau powered by a vertical-twin engine and was produced from 1902 to 1903. It served as a crossover model with the Acme business. In June 1903, Reber bought the former Acme Machine Company bicycle factory at Eighth and Elm Streets in Reading for $47,000 at an American Bicycle Company receivership auction. He said the site would be used for automobile production. With the purchase, Reber Manufacturing announced a name change to Acme Motor Car Company. Later in 1903, James Reber hired Victor Jakob, formerly of Daimler in Germany, to develop the 1904 Type V Acme. The Reber automobile's brief production run thus connects the company's own name with the subsequent Acme motor-car identity.
