Take a small piece of local automobile history along for your golf day with this Reber Manufacturing Company golf towel. Founded in 1901 by James C. Reber, the company pursued experimental automobiles around Reading and Wyomissing. Its Type IV Model A was produced from 1902 to 1903, just before the announced transition to Acme Motor Car Company. The design connects a day on the course with the story of a short-lived maker and the changing identity of early American motoring.

Reber Manufacturing Company was founded in 1901 by James C. Reber to build automobiles in the Reading, Pennsylvania, area. On July 15, 1901, Reber announced plans for a plant at Wyomissing and said he had built and tested a prototype. The company developed several experimental models. In 1902, Reber hired engineer James Heaslet, formerly of Autocar, to help design a French-type automobile. The resulting Reber Type IV Model A was a tonneau powered by a vertical-twin engine and was produced from 1902 to 1903. It served as a crossover model with the Acme business. In June 1903, Reber bought the former Acme Machine Company bicycle factory at Eighth and Elm Streets in Reading for $47,000 at an American Bicycle Company receivership auction. He said the site would be used for automobile production. With the purchase, Reber Manufacturing announced a name change to Acme Motor Car Company. Later in 1903, James Reber hired Victor Jakob, formerly of Daimler in Germany, to develop the 1904 Type V Acme. The Reber automobile's brief production run thus connects the company's own name with the subsequent Acme motor-car identity.
