Rider-Lewis Motor Car Company Men's Sport Polo Shirt
Product Details & Size Guide
Show your interest in an early Indiana motor company with this Rider-Lewis sport polo shirt. Founded in 1908, the company built cars first in Muncie and later in Anderson, bringing a Boston-designed six-cylinder engine to the young American automobile market. Its lineup expanded in 1910 with the four-cylinder Model Four, before receivership and a plant sale brought production to a close. A thoughtful choice for car enthusiasts drawn to brass-era engineering and the short, distinctive stories of regional manufacturers.
Rider-Lewis automobiles were built in Indiana from 1908 to 1911. Ralph Lewis of Boston designed a six-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an overhead cam, rated at 40/45 horsepower. George D. Rider financed manufacturing, and the Rider-Lewis Motor Car Company was established to produce the cars. The company introduced its automobile at the Indianapolis Motor Show in March 1908, priced at $2,500. Production began in a converted factory in Muncie. In 1909, operations moved to a newly built factory in Anderson. For 1910, the six-cylinder Excellent Six was joined by the four-cylinder Model Four, offered at $1,050. The company entered receivership in September 1910, but production continued. The following month, a court order attached its Anderson property after creditors believed the company was preparing to move out of state. A few more Model Fours were built into early 1911. By March, the Rider-Lewis plant had been sold to Nyberg Motor Works, marking the end of the company's automobile production.
