GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Celebrate the history behind a familiar pharmacy name with this Rite Aid T-shirt. Alex Grass opened the first Thrift D Discount Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1962; the growing company became Rite Aid when it went public in 1968. Regional acquisitions, new store banners, and major changes in ownership later shaped its nationwide story. Made for former customers, retail history fans, and collectors, this shirt recalls the neighborhood drugstore chain and its distinctive place in recent American commerce.
Rite Aid began as Thrift D Discount Center, founded by Alex Grass in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on September 12, 1962. The chain expanded into five more states by 1965 and adopted the Rite Aid name when it went public in 1968. It moved to the New York Stock Exchange in 1970 and grew through regional acquisitions, including Read's Drug Store in 1977 and Gray Drug in 1987. A 1996 purchase of the West Coast chain Thrifty PayLess brought the company to 1,000 additional stores. In 2007, Rite Aid acquired the U.S. business of Jean Coutu Group, including Eckerd and Brooks stores, converting those banners to Rite Aid. The chain reached 5,059 stores in 2008. A proposed 2015 merger with Walgreens was abandoned; in 2018, Walgreens instead purchased 1,932 locations. Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023, emerged as a privately held company in September 2024, and filed again in May 2025, intending to sell its assets and close or sell its remaining pharmacies. By October 2025, its remaining stores had closed. Trademark ownership later passed to an unrelated Rite Aid LLC, which relaunched the name as a web-based blood screening business.
