Carry a story of Canadian architecture into your daily routine with this RAIC tumbler. Founded in 1907, the institute brought national coordination to provincial groups and used its journal to share knowledge about building practices and design. Its history spans postwar professional collaboration and a 2006 commitment to the 2030 Challenge for more responsible building. A considered everyday companion for architects, design students, and admirers of the built environment.
The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is a national, not-for-profit organization representing architects and architecture. It began operating in 1907, bringing country-level coordination to provincial architectural groups that already existed. Its journal shared information with members about Canadian building practices and design considerations. In 1948, as Newfoundland prepared to join Canada, architects there formed the Newfoundland Architects Association, which became an RAIC chapter. After World War II, the institute fostered collaboration between architects and related professions, including interior design, arts and crafts, and worked to develop measurement standards for the building trades. A 2000 study found that the journal had perpetuated gender-based stereotypes about architecture. In 2006, RAIC signed on to the 2030 Challenge, which urges the global architecture community to pursue carbon-neutral building practices by that year. Today, RAIC advocates for responsible architecture and excellence in the built environment, and has chapters in British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia. Its annual Conference on Architecture supports networking, continuing education, and recognition of architectural excellence.
