S. G. Warburg & Co. was a London-based investment bank founded in 1946 by Siegmund Warburg, Erich Körner and Henry Grunfeld. The firm rose to prominence after acquiring Seligman Bros. in 1957, which brought it a place on the Accepting Houses Committee. In 1958–1959, it advised Tube Investments in its successful bid for British Aluminium, a contest remembered as the “Aluminium War.” During the 1960s, the bank became known for mergers and takeovers, including the UK’s first hostile takeover, and for issuing the first Eurobond. It expanded in the 1970s through a US venture with Paribas and a 40% interest in A.G. Becker & Co.; after the partnership ended, Paribas bought out Warburg’s interest in 1983. In 1984, the firm acquired stockbrokers and a government gilt broker during the City’s “Big Bang” reforms. By the early 1990s, it was a leading UK M&A adviser and asset manager, with Mercury Asset Management as a subsidiary. A proposed merger with Morgan Stanley collapsed in 1994. Swiss Bank Corporation acquired the firm in 1995 and combined it with its investment banking unit as SBC Warburg. The business later became Warburg Dillon Read, then UBS Warburg after the 1998 merger that created UBS. The Warburg name was retired in 2003 when the operation became UBS Investment Bank.
