Share a Northern California railway story with the next generation of train fans. The Sacramento Northern Railway brought together routes that connected Chico, Sacramento, and Oakland, carrying the legacy of two earlier interurban systems. Its passenger trains included the Comet and Meteor, before passenger service ended in 1941 and freight became the focus. This kids tee is a fun way to celebrate regional rail history, whether worn on a family outing, at a heritage rail event, or by a young collector curious about trains and the places they connected.
The Sacramento Northern Railway grew from two California interurban systems. The Northern Electric Railway began service between Chico and Sacramento in 1907, after its predecessor, the Chico Electric Railway, was sold in 1906. It became the Sacramento Northern Railroad in 1914. To the south, the Oakland, Antioch and Eastern Railway opened service in stages and completed service between Oakland and Sacramento in 1914; after receivership, it was reorganized as the San Francisco–Sacramento Railroad in 1920. Western Pacific acquired that railroad in 1922 and formed a new Sacramento Northern Railway in 1925 to group its interurban holdings. The two routes were consolidated under the Sacramento Northern name in 1928, connecting Chico and Oakland across 183 miles and through Sacramento. Passenger trains, including the Comet and Meteor, offered long-distance interurban service; some included dining cars. Passenger operations ended in 1941 as the railway shifted toward freight. Diesel locomotives gradually replaced electric operation, which ended in 1965. The Sacramento Northern name ended when Union Pacific acquired Western Pacific in 1983. Today, portions of its former route serve heritage rail, freight, transit, and trail uses.
