GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Remember a distinctive name in Houston shopping history with this Sakowitz keepsake. The company began as a family clothing business in Galveston, then grew in Houston from a gentlemen’s haberdashery into a full department store and suburban chain. Its stores and catalogues captured changing tastes in American fashion and commerce. This square porcelain fridge magnet brings that story into the home and makes a thoughtful collectible for retail-history enthusiasts.
Sakowitz began in Galveston, Texas, where Louis Sakowitz and his son Samuel opened a small clothing store after Louis had built a peddler business serving merchant seamen. In 1902, Louis and his sons Simon and Tobias established Sakowitz Brothers, a gentlemen’s haberdashery at 2113 Market Street. The family expanded to Houston in 1911, and the Galveston store closed in 1917 as the business consolidated in Houston. The Houston store moved to the Gulf Building in 1929 and to a five-story Main Street location in 1951, becoming a full department store. Suburban expansion began at Gulfgate Mall in 1956; a large Westheimer Road store followed in 1959. The chain eventually reached 16 locations. Financial strain led to bankruptcy in 1985 and the sale or closure of locations outside Greater Houston. In 1988, Australian developer L. J. Hooker acquired a controlling interest in Sakowitz. Its Cincinnati store opened in 1989, but Hooker filed for bankruptcy that year and Sakowitz was liquidated. All locations had closed by 1990. Sakowitz Furs continued separately under the Gronauer family.
