GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a music retail story with you wherever you go with this Sam Goody Passport Cover. What began as a New York City record shop grew into a chain with a notable international chapter, operating in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1999. Sam Goody’s journey also reflects the rise of mail-order record deals and the growth of mall music stores. A fitting travel companion for brand collectors and fans of the history behind familiar music retailers.
Sam Goody traces its origins to New York City, where Sam "Goody" Gutowitz opened a small record shop on 9th Avenue after long-playing vinyl records emerged in the late 1940s. He also sold records by mail at discount prices. The Sam Goody name became a chain in 1951. Creditors took control in 1959, and in 1976 the chain was purchased by Musicland. In 1978, American Can Company, later renamed Primerica, acquired the company; it also owned Minneapolis-based Musicland. The business expanded through store growth and acquisitions, including Musicland's 1986 purchase of the 34-store Licorice Pizza chain and 26 other record shops. Licorice Pizza locations were renamed Sam Goody stores in 1987. The chain operated in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1999, when it sold its remaining stores to rival retailers. Best Buy acquired Musicland in 2001 and sold it two years later. In 2006, Trans World Entertainment purchased Sam Goody from Musicland's administration. It kept 345 of 400 Sam Goody and Suncoast stores open and began converting mall locations to its FYE brand. Most Sam Goody stores were converted to FYE by 2008. Trans World sold FYE's parent company to Sunrise Records in 2020.
