Saturn Airways began as All-American Airways, an irregular air carrier incorporated in Florida on January 1, 1948, and based in Miami. It changed its name to Saturn Airways in 1960 and began operating Douglas DC-6 aircraft. In 1963 it acquired larger DC-7Cs from BOAC for transatlantic passenger charters. On November 5, 1965, Saturn completed a merger with AAXICO Airlines, effectively an acquisition by AAXICO, whose owner Howard Korth became the controlling figure. Saturn moved its headquarters from Miami to Oakland, California, in 1967, and its DC-8 jets entered service in late 1967 and early 1968 for European passenger charters. The airline also carried military freight, using Lockheed L-100 Hercules aircraft and serving Logair and Quicktrans contracts. It took on cargo operations and aircraft from Airlift International in 1970 and Universal Airlines in 1972. After transatlantic passenger growth slowed and costs rose, Saturn left the passenger business in November 1974, becoming a cargo carrier. It merged into Trans International Airlines on November 30, 1976. Korth became a major shareholder of Transamerica Corporation and a Trans International vice chair.
