Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take Sav-A-Center history along on the road with a travel mug honoring a familiar supermarket name. Introduced in the 1980s around New Orleans, the banner became part of a wider A&P story that reached beyond Louisiana and Mississippi. Its local chapter includes acquisitions, the effects of Hurricane Katrina, and the eventual handoff of many stores to regional successors. A meaningful choice for former shoppers, New Orleans enthusiasts, and collectors of supermarket and retail history.
Sav-A-Center was a supermarket trade name owned by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. The name first appeared in the 1980s in the greater New Orleans area, and the Louisiana division also operated stores in Mississippi. A&P expanded the local group in 1999 by buying six stores after Schwegmann filed for bankruptcy, then acquired four New Orleans stores from Albertsons in April 2004 for conversion to the banner. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina damaged many locations: 21 reopened within months, two reopened after flood repairs, and five closed permanently. A&P left Baton Rouge in April 2007 and announced plans to sell its remaining New Orleans-area stores as it refocused on the Northeast and merged with Pathmark. In September 2007, Rouses was announced as the buyer of the remaining stores; it took over 16, including Mississippi locations and the French Quarter A&P, while another went to Breaux Mart and others closed. Separately, A&P used the Sav-A-Center name for stores in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Wisconsin and the South. Some locations later became A&P Food Market, Food Basics, or Pathmark Sav-A-Center. A&P sold its Canadian operations to Metro in 2005, and those stores were converted by 2009.
