Schaak Electronics grew from a radio and television repair shop Leander Schaak began in South Minneapolis in 1957. His son Richard, known as Dick, joined him in 1960 and took over after his father died that October, shifting the business toward audio equipment. By 1971, the retailer had ten stores, including locations in St. Cloud, Rochester and the Twin Cities. It went public in 1972, and in 1973 acquired eight Chicago stores and 19 other locations from Allied Radio, doubling its size. Expansion and recession brought losses, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1975. After resolving bank issues, it returned to profitability in 1976 and repaid creditors by 1978. Schaak later expanded into personal computers through Digital Den and opened Schaak's Computer Academy in Maplewood in 1983. In 1985 it filed for bankruptcy and began liquidating assets. On February 14, 1986, it closed its remaining 21 stores and laid off 250 employees. The Sound of Music, later known as Best Buy, purchased its inventory. Schaak Electronics had been headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, and operated across the upper Midwest.
