Scotty's Builders Supply opened in Winter Haven as Home Builders Supply in 1924, serving a Florida community growing through the land boom. Under James W. Sweet, the company expanded into a chain with as many as 162 stores, supported generations of builders and shoppers, and became a familiar home improvement name. Its stores closed in 2005, but its story remains part of Florida retail history. Scotty's Builders Supply began in Winter Haven, Florida, amid the state's 1920s land boom. In 1924, local farmer Evanda Hugh Sweet opened Home Builders Supply to meet demand for materials as new residents built homes, hotels, and businesses; the company incorporated in 1925. Its name changed from Home Builders Supply, Inc. to Scotty's Home Builders Supply, Inc. in 1968, then to Scotty's, Inc. in 1973. Under James W. Sweet, the business grew to 162 stores at its peak, with more than 5,500 employees during his tenure. The GIB Group provided resources in the 1980s, and in the 1990s Sweet sold his stock, making GIB the chain's new owner. Scotty's operated about 150 stores at its peak and competed in the home improvement market, but closed all its stores in 2005. Oak Point Partners acquired remnant assets from the Scott Acquisition Corp. bankruptcy estates on September 17, 2008. Sweet, a Winter Haven High School graduate and longtime Florida business development group member, died in Winter Haven on October 28, 2009, aged 91.
