Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
For long days and fans of far-reaching business stories, this Sea Containers travel mug recognizes a company built around movement. Founded in 1965 with an initial $100,000, Sea Containers began by leasing cargo boxes to shipping companies, then diversified into railways, ferries and hotels. The Venice-Simplon Orient Express and Great North Eastern Railway became notable chapters in that expansion. Its history offers a distinctive companion for journeys, and a collectible tribute to transport and corporate change.
Sea Containers was established in 1965 by James Sherwood, a Yale graduate and former United States Navy officer, with initial capital of $100,000. Registered in Bermuda, it began by leasing cargo containers to shipping companies. It became a public company in 1968 and joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1974. Over the following decades, the business diversified into hotels, railways and ferry services. Sherwood’s hotel purchases helped create the Orient-Express Hotels chain, in which Sea Containers retained a stake until 2005. He also arranged the restoration of 1920s rail carriages for the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, relaunched in 1982. In 1996, subsidiary Great North Eastern Railway began operating the InterCity East Coast rail franchise; a new franchise awarded in 2005 required payments to the British state rather than subsidies. Financial setbacks and heavy debt preceded Sherwood’s resignation in March 2006. Sea Containers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 16 October 2006. The remaining maritime container interests transferred to newly created SeaCo Ltd in 2009, while the rest of the group was wound down and liquidated.
