Product Details & Size Guide
Make room for plans, notes, or travel memories alongside the history of Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Its network grew from earlier southeastern railroads and connected communities across Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. The Silver Meteor added a celebrated passenger chapter when it began service in 1939, while the 1967 merger marked the end of SAL as an independent railroad. This notebook is a thoughtful everyday choice for rail fans, collectors, and anyone fascinated by the region’s transportation past.
Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL), known colloquially as the Seaboard Railroad, operated from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967. Its predecessor railroads dated to the 1830s, including the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad, chartered in 1832, and the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. After extensive reorganizations and post-Civil War rebuilding, the roads developed into a connected system. SAL was headquartered in Portsmouth, Virginia, until its main offices moved to Richmond in 1958. Its main route ran from Richmond through Raleigh, Columbia, Savannah, and Jacksonville to Tampa, with additional lines reaching Miami, Atlanta, Birmingham, and other southeastern cities. Seaboard carried manufactured goods and vacationers south and transported Southern timber, minerals, and produce, including Florida citrus, north. Its passenger service included the Silver Meteor, introduced in 1939. Following bankruptcy during the Great Depression, the railroad was reorganized as the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1946. On July 1, 1967, it merged with longtime rival Atlantic Coast Line Railroad to form Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. The successor rail network later became part of Seaboard System and, in 1986, CSX Transportation.
