Founded in 1892 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck, the business began as a mail-order watch company in Minneapolis. The partners moved it to Chicago in 1887, and in 1893 named their expanding catalog business Sears, Roebuck and Co. Julius Rosenwald joined the enterprise in 1895; Sears and Rosenwald took it public in 1906. Sears opened its first retail store in Chicago in 1925, adding department stores to its established mail-order operation. Its catalog and stores offered a broad range of household goods, while brands such as Kenmore and Craftsman became part of its retail identity. Sears was the largest U.S. retailer through the 1980s, before Walmart surpassed it. In 2005, Kmart acquired Sears, creating Sears Holdings. The parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 15, 2018. Eddie Lampert later won approval to acquire the business, and Transformco took over operations. The U.S. chain contracted sharply; the article reports five Sears stores remaining in the United States as of December 2025.
