Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a piece of catalog-showroom history along on your travels with this Service Merchandise travel mug. Founded in Tennessee in 1934, the retailer expanded across the country and became a familiar stop near major shopping malls. Customers browsed catalogs and working displays, submitted item numbers, then collected their purchases near the exit, creating a memorable routine for generations of shoppers. This keepsake honors that distinctive experience and the company’s place in the changing story of American retail.
Service Merchandise began in 1934 as a five-and-dime store founded by Harry and Mary Zimmerman in Pulaski, Tennessee. After leaving the wholesale business, they developed the company into a catalog-showroom retailer, opening a showroom at 309 Broadway in downtown Nashville in 1960. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a leading retailer of this kind, expanding nationwide, often near major shopping malls, and reaching more than $4 billion in annual sales at its peak. In the early 1980s, its headquarters moved from Nashville to nearby Brentwood, Tennessee. In May 1985, the company acquired H. J. Wilson Co. for approximately $200 million to strengthen its presence in Sun Belt states. Its retail holdings also included Zim’s Jewelers, HomeOwners Warehouse, later called Mr. HOW Warehouse, The Lingerie Store and The Toy Store. Facing competition from large discount chains, Service Merchandise restructured in the 1990s and shifted its focus toward jewelry, gifts and home decor. It entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1999. After another attempted turnaround in 2001, it closed its remaining showrooms and ceased operations by early 2002.
