The Shearson name began with Shearson, Hammill & Co., founded in 1902 by Edward Shearson and Caleb Wild Hammill. The brokerage and investment banking firm was headquartered at 71 Broadway in New York City and maintained a main office in Chicago. After financial difficulties during the 1973–1974 market crash, it merged with Hayden Stone in 1974, becoming Shearson Hayden Stone. A 1979 merger with Loeb, Rhoades, Hornblower & Co. created Shearson Loeb Rhoades. American Express acquired the firm in 1981, forming Shearson/American Express. In 1984, American Express combined it with Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb as Shearson Lehman/American Express. The 1988 acquisition of E.F. Hutton & Co. brought the name Shearson Lehman Hutton; in 1990, the business became Shearson Lehman Brothers. In 1993, American Express sold Shearson’s retail brokerage and asset management business to Primerica, where it joined Smith Barney as Smith Barney Shearson. The Shearson name was discontinued in 1994. That year, American Express spun off its remaining investment banking and institutional businesses as Lehman Brothers.
