John Shillito arrived in Cincinnati in 1817 from Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and began working for a local business. In 1830 he partnered with William McLaughlin to sell dry goods; Robert W. Burnett and James Pullen joined after McLaughlin left the following year. The growing firm moved in 1833, and Shillito bought out his partners in 1837, becoming sole owner in 1842. In 1857 he acquired a site for a five-story store, designed by Cincinnati architect James W. McLaughlin. The business moved in 1879 to a larger six-story building at Race and Seventh Streets. After John Shillito's death that year, his son Stewart led the company. Following Stewart's death in 1925, the business was sold to the Lazarus Company, while the Shillito name remained. Suburban branches followed, beginning with Tri-County Mall in 1960. The name joined corporate sibling Rike's as Shillito-Rike's in 1982, then gave way to Lazarus in 1986. In 2005, stores operating under the Lazarus name adopted the Macy's brand. The landmark Race and Seventh building is now the Lofts at Shillito Place; renovation in 1998 revealed its original octagonal skylight.
