Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Shirokiya’s history spans centuries of change, beginning with a dry goods shop in Nihonbashi in 1662 and continuing through department-store retail in Tokyo and Honolulu. The Ala Moana story later became Japan Village Walk, a gathering place that opened in 2016. This foldable mobile phone display stand brings a small reminder of that distinctive company journey to your everyday routine. It is a fitting pick for former visitors, retail-history fans, and collectors of the Shirokiya name.
Shirokiya began in August 1662, when Hikotaro Omura opened a dry goods store in Nihonbashi, Edo, now Tokyo, under the name Shirokiya Gofukuten. In 1886 it expanded into clothing and other goods, and in 1903 opened a western-style department store. An earthquake destroyed its original store in 1923; a major fire destroyed its larger building in 1932. After wartime damage and a difficult postwar period, Shirokiya joined the Tokyu Group in 1958. Its Japanese brand was phased out, with the Nihonbashi store renamed in 1967, while overseas branches continued under the Shirokiya name. The first opened at Honolulu's Ala Moana Center in 1959; branches followed in Maui in 1973 and Pearlridge in 1981. Tokyu sold the remaining Hawaiian business to seven senior executives in 2001, and Shirokiya Holdings reopened the store in 2002. The Ala Moana department store closed in March 2016, and Shirokiya Japan Village Walk opened there that June. The food hall closed in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shirokiya's former retail presence thus spans a Japanese department-store history and a later Honolulu chapter; its last location closed in 2020.
