Founded in Belleville, Illinois, in 1979, the chain grew throughout Greater St. Louis and became part of many households’ shopping routines. Its mix of full-service departments and discount-market features made it distinctive, while fuel centers later extended the brand’s presence in Wood River and Alton. Shop ’n Save began in 1979 as a grocery store in Belleville, Illinois, and grew into a chain serving the Greater St. Louis area, with three additional stores in Springfield, Illinois. At its peak, the chain had 36 stores. Ted Wetterau acquired it in 1982, and in 1992 Wetterau Inc. was acquired by SuperValu, making Shop ’n Save a SuperValu subsidiary. Its St. Louis-area stores combined features of full-service grocers and discount supermarkets: large stores with delis, butcher counters, liquor sections and pharmacies, alongside simpler furnishings, private-label goods and customer bagging. The chain added Fuel Express Centers in Wood River in December 2007 and Alton in March 2008, and introduced fuel rewards in January 2008. In April 2018, SuperValu pursued a sale of its company-owned St. Louis stores and some former Food Lion locations. On September 18, SuperValu announced that Schnucks Markets would buy 19 Shop ’n Save locations, with the rest set to close. All remaining Shop ’n Save locations closed on November 19, 2018. The Shop ’n Save name also continued under license at independently operated stores in several other states.
