GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep Shopko’s place in regional business history close at hand with this Metal Business Card Holder. Founded by pharmacist James Ruben and investors in 1962, the company grew from its first Green Bay store into a Midwest retailer with pharmacy and optical services. Shopko’s changing corporate story included public trading, private ownership, the Pamida connection, and its 2019 retail closure. This keepsake suits collectors, former employees, and anyone interested in the companies that shaped everyday commerce across Wisconsin and nearby states.
Shopko began as ShopKo Corporation, founded by Chicago pharmacist James Ruben and investors in 1962. Its first department store opened on Military Avenue in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the company later established its headquarters in nearby Ashwaubenon. It expanded across the Midwest, adding pharmacy and optical services and, in 1971, merging with SuperValu. Shopko became publicly traded in 1991. Its 1999 purchase of regional discount retailer Pamida added stores serving smaller communities; Pamida later separated from Shopko, then merged with it in 2012, when many former Pamida locations became Shopko Hometown stores. In 2005, an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners acquired Shopko and returned it to private ownership. The company adopted the Shopko name in 2007, while smaller Shopko Express pharmacies and Hometown stores broadened its formats. Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 16, 2019, and announced that March that it would close its remaining stores. Most retail operations ended by June 23, 2019. Shopko Optical locations continued operating and were later acquired by Fielmann AG.
