Celebrate the story of Shopko with a toddler tee that brings a piece of Upper Midwest retail history into everyday family memories. The first ShopKo department store opened in Green Bay in 1962, beginning a regional journey that reached communities across several states. Shopko later grew through changing chapters involving pharmacies, Pamida and Shopko Hometown. Its broad retail operations ended in 2019, making the name a meaningful reminder of a familiar store experience shared across generations.
Shopko began in 1962, when pharmacist James Ruben and investors opened the first ShopKo department store at 216 S. Military Avenue in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The chain expanded across Wisconsin and into Michigan, then merged with SuperValu in 1971. It became publicly traded in 1991. Shopko acquired regional discount retailer Pamida in 1999 and operated it as a separate division until 2007, when Pamida was reestablished as an independent company. Shopko was acquired by an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners in 2005 and changed its name from ShopKo Stores, Inc. to Shopko Stores, Inc. in 2007. Pamida and Shopko merged again in 2012, and many former Pamida stores became Shopko Hometown locations. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 16, 2019, and announced that all remaining stores would close that March. Retail operations ended on June 23, 2019. Shopko Optical locations continued operating; the optical business was later acquired by Fielmann AG.
