GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Shoppers Fair began in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1956 and grew into a regional discount department store chain with a notable presence in Michigan. This polo shirt brings that retail story into an everyday wardrobe, with a nod to the shoppers and communities who remember the chain. By 1962, Shoppers Fair had 35 stores across 12 states. Its history continued through Detroit-area store acquisitions and closures, making the name a thoughtful conversation starter for collectors of American retail history.
Shoppers Fair was an American discount department store chain founded in 1956 with a store in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The chain was owned by New York City-based Mangel and primarily operated in Michigan. By 1962, it had become a Mangel subsidiary, with 35 stores in 12 states, including nine in Michigan. In 1971, Shoppers Fair agreed to acquire eight stores that Borman's Inc. had closed in the Detroit metropolitan area because they were unprofitable. One of these, in Roseville, had never opened under its previous operator, Yankee Stores. Shoppers Fair also figured in two name-related lawsuits, in 1960 and 1964; both rulings favored the other businesses involved. Mangel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 1974, when it had 46 Shoppers Fair stores and 94 clothing stores operating as Mangels. By December 1974, all Shoppers Fair stores in Detroit had closed. The chain's ten remaining stores went out of business by 1975, ending its retail history.
