Keep a small reminder of Shuttle by United close at hand. The West Coast service began flying in 1994, first linking San Francisco and Los Angeles, then expanding its reach and developing a connecting role after 1996. Its move from Oakland to San Francisco as a hub and its 1999 United Shuttle name change capture a short but notable chapter in United Airlines history. A fitting keepsake for airline collectors and fans of 1990s aviation.
Shuttle by United was a United Airlines subsidiary operating a West Coast “airline within an airline” from 1994 to 2001. Development and testing began in May 1993 at United’s Chicago headquarters, and its first flight departed San Francisco for Los Angeles on October 1, 1994. The service initially used Oakland as its hub and offered simplified fares and frequent flights, later expanding to 20 cities. Its fleet consisted of Boeing 737-300 and 737-500 aircraft. In February 1996, United shifted the service toward connecting passengers with domestic and international flights, and San Francisco replaced Oakland as its hub. United opened a second base at Los Angeles International Airport in 1999, the year the name changed to United Shuttle. After air travel declined following the September 11 attacks, United folded the operation into its mainline service in 2001. The aircraft returned to mainline service and were eventually repainted in 2007. United later introduced Ted, a separate leisure-focused airline-within-an-airline concept, in place of reviving the Shuttle.
