GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Add a thoughtful chapter of retail history to your everyday wardrobe with this Silo quarter zip pullover. Founded in Philadelphia in 1946, the company moved from installment sales at customers' doors to a Manayunk store selling appliances and televisions. It later expanded well beyond Pennsylvania, while the Audio World name recalled its growing focus on sound equipment. Made for fans of American store history and former Silo shoppers, this design honors a brand whose story traveled from local beginnings to national reach.

Silo began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Sidney Cooper founded the business in 1946 after serving in World War II. Its name combined the first two letters of Cooper and his wife Lorraine's names. Before opening a retail shop, the company sold goods door to door on installment plans; around 1951, it opened its first store in Philadelphia's Manayunk neighborhood, selling appliances and televisions. The early discounter expanded across the Philadelphia region and went public in 1962. In 1970, it entered Colorado by buying Downing's stores in Denver, then acquired three Appliance-TV City stores in Arizona. Audio World, a wholly owned subsidiary, launched in 1972 and later became part of Silo store departments; the chain used the Silo/Audio World name for a time. After Cooper's death in 1976, son-in-law Barry Feinberg led the company. Pittsburgh-based Cyclops Steel acquired Silo in 1980, supporting rapid national expansion. Silo acquired 19 Los Angeles-area stores from the Federated Group in 1989. British retailer Dixons Group bought Silo in 1987; in 1993 it sold a controlling stake to Detroit-based Fretter, Inc. Fretter closed the remaining Silo stores by the end of 1995, and the parent entered bankruptcy. The remaining company stores closed by May 1996.
