Its headquarters were initially near Marquette County Airport in Negaunee Township and later moved to Chicago’s Near North Side. During the 1980s, the airline expanded service linking Michigan communities with Chicago and Detroit, adding Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirantes, Shorts 360s, and YS-11s. On April 28, 1985, it began flying as a Republic Express-branded carrier from Detroit; on October 1, 1985, it began American Eagle-branded service from Chicago. Simmons was acquired by AMR Corp. on August 8, 1988, and soon ended its Northwest Airlink flights. In 1993, it acquired certain assets of Metro Airlines and its holdings. In 1998, Wings West Airlines and Flagship Airlines were merged under Simmons’s IATA designator, MQ. The resulting certificated airline was named American Eagle Airlines, making Simmons the predecessor to that airline.
