Established in 1969 as Wrangler Aviation, it began operations in 1973 with Lockheed Constellation aircraft under FAA Part 91. It became a Part 121 carrier in 1978 and an all-cargo airline in 1981. Following federal concerns in 1991 and 1992 about ownership, citizenship, and compliance, the company restructured to continue operating. In 1991, it adopted the name Tradewinds Airlines. Florida West Airlines acquired Tradewinds on February 28, 1994; the airline was sold a year later after filing for bankruptcy. In December 2008, Sky Lease One, an affiliate of Florida-based Centurion Air Cargo, purchased Tradewinds. On September 4, 2011, Tradewinds Airlines became Sky Lease Cargo, with changes to its IATA and ICAO codes. In February 2025, the company announced the closure of its facilities at Miami International Airport and layoffs affecting 129 employees.
