GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take the story of a pioneering New York automobile company along for the day with this Smith & Mabley travel mug. Founded in 1900, the firm imported European marques, built a small run of American C. G. V. cars, and began S & M Simplex production in 1904. More than 220 Simplex vehicles were made before bankruptcy in 1907, after which a successor company carried the Simplex name forward. Made for road-trip planning, commuting, and sharing a lasting interest in early automotive history.
Founded in New York City in 1900 by A. D. Proctor Smith and his brother-in-law, Carlton R. Mabley, Smith & Mabley began as an importer of European automobiles, including vehicles from C. G. V., Panhard, Renault and Mors, with Mercedes and Isotta Fraschini added later. In 1902, the company began licensed production of the American C. G. V.; seven cars were built before production ended in 1903, after which importing resumed. The company also joined the automobile trade association A.L.A.M. in 1903, and a related patent lawsuit was dropped. That year it acquired a seven-story factory on East 83rd Street and moved its offices, showroom and garage to 513-519 Seventh Avenue. Engineer G. Edward Franquist designed the plant and the company’s four-cylinder engines. Production of the S & M Simplex began in 1904 through the Smith & Mabley Manufacturing Company. More than 220 Simplex vehicles were built before production ended in early 1907. Financial troubles during the downturn preceding the Panic of 1907 led to bankruptcy. In 1907, Herman Broesel, Sr., took over the company’s assets and formed the Simplex Automobile Company, which continued production under the Simplex name.
