Carry SonAir’s story into your daily routine with this 20oz Insulated Tumbler. The Angolan air services company began as DAR in 1979 and became known for transporting people to onshore and offshore oil facilities, as well as serving travelers across Africa. Its former Luanda to Houston service marked a notable connection between Angola and the United States. For aviation fans and collectors, this tumbler brings a meaningful piece of the company’s changing route and business history along for the day.
SonAir Airline Services, S.A., also known as SonAir, is an Angolan air services company and a venture of the national petroleum company Sonangol Group. Its origins date to 10 October 1979, when it was established as DAR (Direcção de Aeronaútica). SonAir provides helicopter transport to onshore and offshore oil facilities, along with scheduled and charter services in Africa and to the United States. It also serves private and government business groups within Angola, including customers outside the oil industry. The company was the first to provide direct passenger and cargo transportation between Angola and the United States. Until 2018, it operated a thrice-weekly Luanda–Houston service using a Boeing 747-400 operated by Atlas Air. SonAir was included in a privatization program announced in 2019, amid Sonangol restructuring and the liberalization of air transport services for the oil industry. The company avoided closure and sought to reinforce its operations amid increased competition. The article lists 12 Beechcraft 1900D aircraft as its fleet in August 2025, and identifies Boeing 737-700 and DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft among its former fleet.
