Celebrate the South Central Bell story wherever the day takes you. Founded in July 1968, the company carried Bell telephone service across Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, with headquarters in Birmingham. After becoming a BellSouth subsidiary in 1984, it reunited with Southern Bell in 1992 as BellSouth Telecommunications. The South Central Bell name continued through 1995, while the network carried on under a successor name. This travel mug honors a regional communications legacy that spans generations and changing corporate identities.
South Central Bell Telephone Company was the Bell System’s operating name for telephone services in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, the company was created in July 1968, when Bell telephone operations in those five states were separated from Southern Bell. Its headquarters was in the building now known as AT&T City Center in Birmingham. In 1984, following the breakup of the Bell System, South Central Bell became a subsidiary of BellSouth Corporation, bringing it back under the same corporate ownership as Southern Bell. The two operating companies were officially reunited in 1992 as BellSouth Telecommunications. South Central Bell and Southern Bell names continued in use until 1995. Though the original company name was retired, the service network continued to operate and conduct business under the new AT&T. The company’s history traces a regional transition from Bell System operations to BellSouth, then to a successor network operating under AT&T.
