Show your interest in Pacific aviation history with a South Pacific Island Airways quarter zip pullover. SPIA's story began with inter-island flights in American Samoa and expanded into a network reaching Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Tahiti, Auckland and beyond. Its varied operations brought together commuter aircraft, long-distance jet service and military charters across Polynesia and Micronesia. From its 1973 certifications to liquidation in 1987, the airline left a distinctive record of ambition, remote connections and changing fortunes. A considered choice for aviation fans and airline-history collectors.

South Pacific Island Airways (SPIA) operated across the Pacific from 1973 to 1987. Founded and mostly owned by attorney George Wray, the company grew from an inter-island service in American Samoa, begun in the early 1970s with a Piper Cherokee Six, into a carrier serving destinations from Hawaii and the U.S. and Canadian west coasts to Alaska, New Zealand, Guam and Tahiti. It received charter and commuter certification in 1973 and scheduled-carrier certification in 1981. Boeing 707 jets served longer routes, while de Havilland Canada Twin Otters provided feeder flights. SPIA also frequently operated military charters in Polynesia and Micronesia. FAA scrutiny intensified in 1983 and 1984; after a charter near the Soviet Union’s Kola Peninsula, the agency ordered the airline shut down in October 1984. SPIA regained scheduled certification in January 1985 and commuter certification in March, but its jet fleet was grounded again in May over hush-kit compliance. Wray’s 1984 swimming accident left him paralyzed, and Mary Phillips took over daily operations. Tax litigation and Chapter 11 proceedings followed. SPIA entered liquidation on February 28, 1987; most remaining assets went to Samoa Air in October 1988.
