Product Details & Size Guide
Mark a place in your collection for Southern Airways, an airline whose routes connected communities across the south-central United States. Founded in 1944 and flying from 1949, the company grew from an Atlanta base and introduced DC-9 service in 1967 as its fleet evolved. Its memorable slogans and expanding network remain part of regional aviation history. This ornament recalls Southern’s story and its July 1979 merger into Republic, making it a thoughtful keepsake for airline memorabilia collectors and transportation-history displays.
Founded by Frank Hulse and Ike Jones in 1944, Southern Airways began flying in 1949 as a U.S. local-service airline. Headquartered in Atlanta, with operations based at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, it connected communities across the south-central United States. Its network grew from 29 airports in 1953 to 50 in 1967, reaching from Memphis and St. Louis to Florida, the Carolinas, and, by the mid-1970s, Grand Cayman. Southern initially flew Douglas DC-3s, added Martin 4-0-4 aircraft in 1961, and introduced Douglas DC-9 jets in 1967. By the time of its merger, it also operated Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjets. In 1978, routes extended west from Memphis to Wichita and Denver. The airline promoted itself as the “Route of the Aristocrats” and used the slogan “Nobody’s Second Class on Southern.” On July 1, 1979, Southern merged with North Central Airlines to form Republic Airlines. Republic later acquired Hughes Airwest and was acquired by Northwest Airlines in 1986. Northwest merged into Delta Air Lines in 2008.
