Carry a reminder of Southern Airways on journeys near and far with this Passport Cover. The airline began flying in 1949 after its 1944 founding, connecting communities from its Atlanta base and gradually extending its reach across the South. By the mid-1970s, its network included Grand Cayman, and in 1978 routes stretched west from Memphis to Wichita and Denver. For aviation enthusiasts and travelers who value the history behind regional air service, it makes a meaningful travel keepsake.
Founded by Frank Hulse and Ike Jones in 1944, Southern Airways began flying in 1949 as a U.S. local-service airline. Headquartered in Atlanta, with operations based at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, it connected communities across the south-central United States. Its network grew from 29 airports in 1953 to 50 in 1967, reaching from Memphis and St. Louis to Florida, the Carolinas, and, by the mid-1970s, Grand Cayman. Southern initially flew Douglas DC-3s, added Martin 4-0-4 aircraft in 1961, and introduced Douglas DC-9 jets in 1967. By the time of its merger, it also operated Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjets. In 1978, routes extended west from Memphis to Wichita and Denver. The airline promoted itself as the “Route of the Aristocrats” and used the slogan “Nobody’s Second Class on Southern.” On July 1, 1979, Southern merged with North Central Airlines to form Republic Airlines. Republic later acquired Hughes Airwest and was acquired by Northwest Airlines in 1986. Northwest merged into Delta Air Lines in 2008.
