GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of Southern Railway’s place in the history of American rail travel. The company was formally established in 1894, drawing together a wide family of predecessor lines to serve communities across the South. Its story encompasses steam passenger service, dieselization, freight routes, and the 1982 transition to Norfolk Southern Railway. Whether kept at home, brought to a desk, or added to a railway collection, this mug is a meaningful choice for railroad fans who appreciate the people and networks behind the name.
Southern Railway was a Class I railroad serving the Southern United States from 1894 to 1982. Its network grew from nearly 150 predecessor lines combined and reorganized over time. Among the lines that formally became part of the company in 1894 were the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, the Richmond and Danville system, and the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad. The South Carolina Canal and Rail Road, an early predecessor, began operating a steam-powered passenger train from Charleston in 1830. Under its first president, Samuel Spencer, Southern expanded its organized system and invested in shops, track, equipment, and industrial development. In 1916, the railroad acquired a line from Meridian, Mississippi, to New Orleans, Louisiana, and its system reached across 13 states. Central of Georgia became part of the system in 1963, and the former Norfolk Southern Railway was acquired in 1974. Southern joined the Norfolk and Western Railway to form Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1980. On June 1, 1982, Southern was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway after absorbing nearly all of Norfolk and Western’s operations. The successor railroad has used that name since.
