GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep the story of Sprouse-Reitz close with this Double-Sided Keychain Charm, a small keepsake inspired by a retailer that began in Tacoma in 1909 and grew across the western United States. The chain’s history includes its five-and-dime roots, a 1989 move to the Sprouse! name, and the liquidation of its remaining stores in 1993. Attach it to keys or a bag as a conversation-starting reminder of a regional shopping landmark and the changing retail landscape it reflected.
Sprouse-Reitz was a five-and-dime store chain based in Portland, Oregon. The Sprouse-Reitz Company was founded in 1909 in Tacoma, Washington, and grew to more than 470 stores across eleven western states. As its business declined, the retailer tried a new identity around January 1989, rebranding its stores as “Sprouse!” In June 1990, when the chain had 287 stores, CEO Robert Sprouse II said it would focus on toys, housewares, crafts, home furnishings, family apparel, greeting cards, wrapping paper, and other paper products. Later that year, the chain was sold for $22.9 million to SR Partners, a joint venture involving real estate and acquisition firms and individual investors. The company could not find a buyer for its remaining stores. In December 1993, Sprouse-Reitz Inc. began liquidating and announced the closure of its remaining 84 locations. The last stores were expected to close in February 1994; by late February, their scheduled closing date was March 20. The chain’s history spans its early growth, a late-era rebranding, an attempted change in retail focus, and liquidation.
