Later that year, the chain was sold for $22.9 million to SR Partners, a joint venture involving real estate and acquisition firms and individual investors. The company could not find a buyer for its remaining stores. In December 1993, Sprouse-Reitz Inc. began liquidating and announced the closure of its remaining 84 locations. The last stores were expected to close in February 1994; by late February, their scheduled closing date was March 20. The chain’s history spans its early growth, a late-era rebranding, an attempted change in retail focus, and liquidation.
