Product Details & Size Guide

Carry a wide-ranging railroad story on the road with this St. Joseph and Grand Island Railway travel mug. The railway linked St. Joseph, Missouri, with Hastings, Grand Island, and eastern Kansas through lines built and connected across several decades. Bankruptcy, reorganization, shifts in Union Pacific control, and the Gibbon-to-Hastings connection all shaped its history. For rail enthusiasts and travelers drawn to Nebraska and Kansas heritage, this piece honors a route whose surviving sections still serve present-day rail operations.

The St. Joseph and Grand Island Railway grew from the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad, which, after several changes of destination, was completed in 1872 as the St. Joseph and Western, linking St. Joseph, Missouri, with Hastings, Nebraska. In 1879, the Hastings and Grand Island Railroad connected its namesake Nebraska cities and was sold to the St. Joseph and Western, extending the route to a Union Pacific connection at Grand Island. Financial problems led to bankruptcy in 1884; Union Pacific acquired the railroad in 1885 and reorganized it as the St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad. Union Pacific lost control in 1898 and regained it in 1906. That year, a connection from Marysville to Topeka linked the railway with Union Pacific's Kansas Pacific route toward Kansas City. In 1914, a connection from Gibbon to Hastings created a more direct route than the one through Grand Island. The railway became an important link between Union Pacific's transcontinental mainline and eastern Kansas. Today, the Hastings-to-Marysville portion remains part of Union Pacific's mainline, while the route east of Marysville to Hiawatha is part of its Hiawatha Subdivision. A short Grand Island stub serves a nearby power plant.
