The Star name had an earlier history: a Hong Kong-based satellite broadcaster founded in 1990, whose name stood for Satellite Television Asian Region, was acquired by News Corporation in 1993. Disney later acquired Star India and other Fox operations as part of its 21st Century Fox acquisition, completed on 20 March 2019. Announced in 2020 as an international general-entertainment brand, Star+ brought together films and television from Disney-related studios and other suppliers, locally produced originals, and live sports from ESPN.
