Steamobile Company of America 20oz Insulated Tumbler
Product Details & Size Guide
Take the story of the Steamobile along through your day with this company-inspired tumbler. Made in Keene, New Hampshire, between 1900 and 1902, the Steamobile began as an ambitious step from cycle manufacturing into steam automobiles. The company introduced named models, displayed its cars at major exhibitions, and even appointed a British agent. For fans of early transport and concise company histories, this tumbler recalls a short-lived marque with a memorable journey from a local factory to a wider audience.
The Steamobile was an American steam car built in Keene, New Hampshire, from 1900 to 1902. Reynold Janney, factory superintendent of the Trinity Cycle Manufacturing Company, developed the car and marketed it in fall 1900. Its two-cylinder, double-acting engine was rated at 7/9 horsepower, and its water-tube boiler contained 420 copper tubes. The first model was priced at $850. Janney organized the Keene Automobile Company, which was purchased in February 1901 by E. P. Wells and Winfield S. Rogers, alongside the newly formed Steamobile Company of America. Janney left to become superintendent of Locomobile Works for two years; Rogers took over as factory superintendent and added a dos-a-dos model priced at $900. In 1901, Steamobile exhibited at the Pan-American Exposition and introduced the Transit, a model with a tonneau body up front, advertised for railroad inspection or package delivery. The Transit cost $1,000. F. Wilkinson & Co. became the British sole agent and showed the cars at the 1902 Royal Agricultural Hall Motor Show. Wells and Rogers then established Roller Bearing and Equipment Company of America in the Keene factory. In June 1902, Standard Roller Bearing of Philadelphia bought the Steamobile Company and the factory, including 40 unsold Steamobiles.
