Keep notes close at hand with a desk accessory inspired by Tailwind Air’s unusual place in regional aviation. The company connected Manhattan with coastal destinations by scheduled seaplane, then moved to charter-only flying after scheduled service ended in early 2024. Its story brings together waterfront bases, commuter travel and a mixed fleet of seaplanes and land aircraft. This note pad is a practical keepsake for aviation enthusiasts, airline history collectors and anyone drawn to memorable journeys across the Northeast.
Tailwind Air LLC was an American commuter scheduled air carrier and charter airline based at Westchester Airport and Sikorsky Memorial Airport. Its main seaplane base was New York Skyports Seaplane Base in Manhattan, and the company also owned a seaplane base in Boston Harbor near Logan International Airport. Tailwind operated scheduled and charter services from Manhattan’s 23rd Street Seaplane Base, connecting Boston, Shelter Island, Bridgeport, East Hampton, and Nantucket. The routes competed with rail and established airline shuttle services, and Tailwind planned to shift routes to all-water airports pending regulatory approval. Its onboard service included complimentary snacks and beverages. Tailwind also had a sister company, Tailwind Air, LLC, which chartered and managed land planes. Scheduled services ceased in early 2024 after the airline reported that they had not become profitable and that it could not secure enough investment to sustain slow growth in ticketing. The company then operated on a charter-only basis. The supplied article states that Tailwind Air filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 15, 2026, marking the end of its four-year service.
